Bergsteigen in Chile (Ojos del Salado)
Kurzbericht über eine Bergexpedition in Chile vom 12.02.2005 bis 12.03. 2005
(Cerro Soquete 5350 Hm, Licancabur 5960 Hm, Ermitano 6146 Hm, Ojos del Salado 6893 Hm)

Sechs Bergfreunde, drei davon Professoren der HM München, machten sich auf, den höchsten Vulkan der Erde, den Ojos del Salado mit 6.893 Meter zu besteigen.

Das Programm hat mein Bergfreund Hans Dietrich Engelhardt ausgearbeitet und mit der Agentur "AZIMUT360" (www.azimut360.com) in Santiago de Chile abgestimmt. AZIMUT organisierte die Tour vor Ort über einen (fairen) Komplettpreis, stellte einen Bergführer und zwei Begleiter, Fahrzeuge, Zelte,etc. Als Bergführer wurde der Schweizer Matin Rihs verpflichtet, der freiberuflich für AZIMUT und andere Agenturen arbeitet, der aber auch selbst Berg- und Trekkingtouren plant, organisiert und durchführt.

Mit Martin hatten wir einen Glücksgriff getan. Er lebt seit 15 Jahren in Chile und hat sich vor kurzem in San Pedro de Atacama ein "Lehmhaus" nach indianischem Vorbild gebaut. Gegenüber der Agentur haben wir die Tour und Martin folgendermaßen beurteilt:

Alle sechs Gruppenmitglieder waren mit dem Verlauf der Tour hoch zufrieden. Alle haben die Gipfel von Cerro Soquete, Licancabur und Ermitano erreicht. Zu dritt standen wir auf dem Gipfel des Ojos del Salado, der uns zuliebe windstill und warm (0 Grad) war und uns damit einen ca. einstündigen Aufenthalt mit grenzenloser Weitsicht erlaubte. Dass wir als einzige Gruppe unterwegs waren, hat die Wirkung noch gesteigert.

Martin Rihs als Begleiter und Führer war für die Gruppe ein besonderer Glücksfall:
Seine breit fundierten und differenzierten Kenntnisse über Geschichte, Geographie, Bevölkerung, Wirtschaft und Natur Chiles und seine überaus einfühlsame und reflektierte geistige Auseinandersetzung mit der einheimischen Bevölkerung in San Pedro haben unsere besondere Bewunderung und Anerkennung gefunden, zumal wir drei Professoren in dieser Hinsicht nicht gerade anspruchslos sind. In der Gruppe hat er stets den richtigen Ton gefunden und ist auf alle Bedürfnisse der Teilnehmerinnen eingegangen. Als Chef der Küche hat er in Qualität und Präsentation von Speisen und Getränken auch anspruchsvolle Erwartungen weit übertroffen und bisherige Erfahrungen rund um den Erdball in den Schatten gestellt.

Das Programm

DAY 1	SANTIAGO (13.02.) Reception at the airport and transfer to the hotel Eurotel.
DAY 2	SANTIAGO - CALAMA - SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA (14.02.) Transfer to the airport. Flight to Calama. Reception and drive to San Pedro de Atacama. Visit of Chuquicamata copper mine if possible. Transfer to San Pedro. In the afternoon we go by car to the Moon Valley. After sunset transfer back to San Pedro. Overnight in the hotel Casa de Don Tomas. (2450m).
DAY 3	SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA - SAN BARTOLO (15.02) Visit of the museum, Quitor fortress and Catarpe valley. We do a nice trek (4h) in an incredible canyon where a river flows in the middle of vertical walls only seperated by 3m. This is a bit of very soft "canyoning" with walks into fresh water. A huge contrast with the desertic surrounding. We arrive at San Bartolo where we camp. (2700m)
DAY 4	SAN BARTOLO - RIO GRANDE (16.02.) Our trek continues (8h) uphill following an ancestral path. On the way we see former mines, impressive cactus, small cultures and rocky cliffs. We arrive to a typical indian village hidden in a fertile valley. We set our camp close to the village (3000m).
DAY 5	RIO GRANDE - MACHUCA (17.02) Nice trek (6-8h) to reach the altiplano (4000m). We cross several cultures, typical local houses and its inhabitants and follow deep valleys. We finally go over a pass that leads us to a nice vega where lamas and alpacas are often welcoming us. Camp.
DAY 6	MACHUCA - PURITAMA - TATIO GEYSERS (18.02.) Drive and trek (2-3h) to Puritama thermal baths where we take the time to relax in the hot springs. Afterwards, we transfer to Tatio Geysers, Camp (4300m).
DAY 7	TATIO GEYSERS - CERRO SOQUETE - TATIO GEYSERS (19.02.) Ascent of Cerro Soquete (5350m). Back to the Camp (4300m).
DAY 8	TATIO GEYSERS - SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA - LAGUNA VERDE (20.02.) Back to San Pedro de Atacama and transfer to Laguna Verde (Bolivia) the Licancabur base camp. Refuge at Laguna Verde, an extraordinary and fascinating lake with incredible colours. (4500m)
DAY 9	LAGUNA VERDE - LICANCABUR (5960m)- SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA (21.02.) Early in the morning, we do a short transfer to the base of Licancabur (4700m). Then we climb this sacred mountain (10h round trip). On the way up we see some old Inca ruins. The climb is quite uncomfortable unstable small rocks on a steep slope, but the reward is simply outstanding. The crater with its lake, the Inca sanctuary, the view on all the desert westbound and the Bolivian Altiplano eastbound. We get down and drive back to San Pedro de Atacama. Hotel Casa de Don Tomas.
DAY 10	SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA - LAGUNA MISCANTI - TILOMONTE - LLULLAILLACO (22.02.) Visit of Toconao village, Jerez fertile valley and the Liparite carrier. We go to Salar de Atacama. Driving to Peine village and Tilomonte oasis where we make a picnic. Driving across the Atacama desert to the base of LLullaillaco were we set our camp (4200m).
DAY 11	LLULLAILLACO - LAGUNA AZUFRE - VULCAN AZUFRE - TALTAL (23.02.) Driving along the Anden-Mountains trough the Atacama desert. Picnic by Laguna Azufre, climbing to the suplhur-volcano Azufre (5200m) and full drive to Taltal, at the Pacific coast (0m). Overnight in the hosteria Taltal.
DAY 12	TALTAL - LAGUNA SANTA ROSA (24.02.) Full day drive. We get up the altiplano once again to Salar de Maricunga and Laguna Santa Rosa where we camp in front of Tres Cruces (6753m) volcano. Camp (3800m).
DAY 13	LAGUNA SANTA ROSA - LAGUNA VERDE (25.02.) Driving across the Atacama desert along Tres Cruces to Laguna Verde. We see Ojos del Salado for the first time and camp close to the thermal baths.
DAY 14	LAGUNA VERDE - ERMITAÑO - LAGUNA VERDE (26.02) In the morning drive to the base of ermitaño (1h, 5000m). Ascent of Ermitaño (6146m). Back to Laguna Verde, camp.
DAY 15	LAGUNA VERDE -, REFUGIO U. DE ATACAMA (27.02) Drive to refuge Universidad de Atacama (5250m), camp 1 of the Ojos del Salado. Here we set our camp.
DAY 16	REFUGE U. DE ATACAMA - REFUGE TEJOS - REFUGE U. DE ATACAMA (28.03.) Acclimatisation climb to refuge Tejos, camp 2 (5750m) carrying equipment and water. Return to refuge U. de Atacama. Camp
DAY 17	REFUGE U. DE ATACAMA - REFUGE TEJOS (01.03) Ascent to refuge Tejos (5720m). Preparation of the camp and if possible, further aclimatisation walk or relax.
DAY 18	REFUGE TEJOS - SUMMIT - REFUGE U. DE ATACAMA (02.03.) Ascent of Ojos del Salado (6893m). Back to refuge U. de Atacama (5250m)
DAY 19	REFUGE U. DE ATACAMA - CALDERA (03.03.) Drive to Laguna Verde, bath and relax in the therms, long drive back to the Pacific coast. Overnight in the hotel Puerta de Sol or similar.
DAY 20	PAN DE AZUCAR (04.03.) Relax, bath, a short boat trip (2h) on which we can observe penguins and sealions in their natural environment. Camp.
DAY 21	PAN DE AZUCAR (05.03.) Relax, bath, a short boat trip (2h) on which we can observe penguins and sealions in their natural environment. Camp.
DAY 22	PAN DE AZUCAR - CHAÑARAL-(LA SERENA) (06.03.) In the morning short transfer to Chañaral bus-station where you take the bus to La Serena. End of AZIMUT-Tour
Day 23 bis 27	Private: hotel in La Serena, Pacific coast, beach, relax, drive to pisco valley,...
Day 28	Drive to Santiago de Chile by bus and fly back to munich
